52nd Gramado Film Festival will feature competitive shows on Canal Brasil

The organization of Gramado Film Festival announces that this year’s edition will adapt to the new reality of Rio Grande do Sul. Because of this, the competitive screenings of Brazilian Short Films and Documentary Feature Films will be shown exclusively on Canal Brasil.

The films will be shown only on Canal Brasil’s linear schedule. The 12 Brazilian short films will air from the 12th to the 15th of August, always starting at 7pm, with three films per session. Next, the five documentaries in competition start at 8:20 pm, with one feature film per night, from the 12th to the 16th. On the 17th, Canal Brasil broadcasts the Awards Ceremony live, with the presentation of the Kikitos, starting at 8:45 pm . The full schedule will be released soon.

For the president of Gramadotur, Rosa Helena Volk, the initiative takes into account tourists and event enthusiasts who will not be able to be in Gramado this year. “We are aware of the delicate situation in which Rio Grande do Sul finds itself. There are hundreds of thousands of seats that have left or will stop landing in Porto Alegre until the reopening of Salgado Filho airport. We are getting around these obstacles through other air routes, such as Canoas, Caxias do Sul and Jaguaruna. These options, still in their infancy and with very limited flights, fragment our logistics operation. We would like to announce that we will have an audience of around three hundred thousand people, as in previous editions. However, we know that many who would like to be in Gramado this year will not be able to. Our attempt is to bring a little of the magic of the Gramado Film Festival to all of Brazil”, she says.

The decision aims to provide an even greater showcase for the films shown at the exhibitions, in a partnership that began during the Covid-19 pandemic. “In 2020, we reinvented ourselves. We have developed a new way to hold a film festival. We brought Gramado to the homes of millions of Brazilians. This year, we want to repeat this feat, bringing the best of cinema to Gramado, but also extending the opportunity to follow a little of our festival to the rest of Brazil”, says Marcos Santuario.

André Saddy, general director of Canal Brasil, reinforces the decades-old partnership between the event and the channel. “Canal Brasil has been a partner of the Gramado Festival since the beginning of its history, 26 years ago. And now, we have once again opened up space in our programming to exclusively show competitive screenings of short films and documentaries. Just as happened in 2020, we are sure that the programming will reach an even larger audience across the country.”

The competitive exhibitions of Brazilian Feature Films, Gaúchos Feature Films and Gaúchos Short Films are held at the Palácio dos Festivals. Other activities, such as tributes, walk of fame, hors concours sessions, parallel exhibitions, the Conexões Gramado Film Market and Educavvideo will also take place in Gramado.
